If you’re considering adding a new patio, driveway, or pathway to your home, you might be overwhelmed by the choice of materials out there. However, one growing in popularity and one of the more cost effective options for driveways  is slabbing - laying down large interlocking stone slabs to cover an area. Slabbing can be very stylish using certain pavers and configurations but also incredibly durable and long-lasting, meaning that it can provide an attractive outdoor area in all weather conditions.

When it comes to choosing the right type of paving slabs for your driveway, there are several considerations to make. Firstly, you need to decide on the size that best fits your requirements - larger slabs require less work but will increase your material costs slightly; however smaller slabs will require more labour time to get to a professional finish or you could go for a combination. Secondly, you should think about the colours and thicknesses that certain slabs come in.

We can assist with all of these aspect but persona preference also plays a part in terms of wha you may think complements your house’s exterior decor and existing landscaping features. Different paving stones have texture variations, which can give you unique patterns across your surface too along with additional character.

Having a strong and sturdy driveway for any surface layer begins with getting the sub base right. The sub base is the foundation of your driveway, and if it is not properly laid, then no matter what type of paving you choose to lay on top, it won't be able to withstand continued vehicle use. To ensure that your driveway will last you for years to come, we first test the ground underneath and make sure that it has adequate strength. Once we have confirmed that your ground is suitable for this task we will lay the sub base layer. This layer will support the weight and pressure of any vehicles using the paving and it should be thick enough to increase the longevity of your paving. Domestic driveways usually require a minimum depth of 100mm, however it's more beneficial to go to 150mm if the gropund allows. The sub-base material, which is made up of crushed aggregate both large and small, rocks ranging from 40mm to dust. The size variety in this mix allows it to interlock when pressure is applied, greatly increasing its effectiveness with the additional strength it gives when compacted down. The compaction results ina much flatter base which minimises the chance for pavers to crack, which is much more likely if the whole surface area under the paver is not flat. Once the sub-base is in place paving flags of at least 50mm thick are generally recommended as they provide a much sturdier and longer-lasting option, able to withstand all the pressures put upon it over several years giving a very relaiable driveway finish.

Paved Driveway Maintenance

As with all driveways and patios the general outdoors will inevitably bring with it a gradual build up of dirt and debris and the best way to keep a paved driveway clean is to do a little often rather than waiting for one cleaning blitz. That said most people do wait for the latter.

When it does come to cleaning or rather keeping your paving slabs looking as good as possible then firstly being on top with brushing debris from it, before it has time to settle in any gaps and allow weeds or moss to take root is good practice. If they have, simply apply weed killer - this is better done with the full weed rather than trying to pull it up with the top breaking off as the leaves will provide more area for the weed killer to penetrate into the weed and kill the roots.

Whilst using a pressure washer to blast away the dirt once it has accumulated will transform the look of your paved driveway taking the approach of prevention rather than cure would be better. The danger with using a pressure washer is that no matter how careful you try to avoid jetting the joints more often than not the jet will loosen and remove some of the jointing. Once that has happened these areas will be the hot spots for weeds to form unless you are quick to re-joint. Howver, all that ends up being more hassle, simply applying a patio or paving cleaner that you can simply spray and leave every 4-6 months is probably the easiest way to maintain a good looking paved driveway. There are many of these or the market and will be a much cheaper than emplying a driveway cleaning company to jet wash your drive.

Frequently Asked Driveway Paving Questions

  • Is a block paving driveway better than a paved driveway?

There really isn't much to choose between them. Both a good strong options if installed correctly . If one block or slab does get damaged it is relatively easy to replace any broken blocks or slabs.

Block paving will be slightly more expensive due to taking longer to install as the smaller bricks will take more time to lay compared to a slab.

  • Can the same paving slabs be used for a driveway and a patio?

Yes, if you select driveway grade pavers for both. Selecting a patio only paver is much more likely to break when used for a driveway, so in this instance the answer would be - no.

Clearly we will advise and select the appropriate pavers for the job.

  • Can you mix different paving slabs together for a driveway?

Yes - absolutely. In fact this will look really good. Mixing difference sized pavers throughout will bring a lot more character to the area.

  • What do you recommend for cleaning paved driveways?

By applying a patio paving cleaner on a regular basis after you have brushed off any larger areas of loose dirt with a stiff brush should prevent the build up of moss and weeds. Sealing evey few years will provide further protection and should negate the need to pressure wash cleaning.
